Why Your Warm-Up Matters More Than You Think (And How to Do It Right)
You've probably heard it a thousand times: warm up before you work out. But most people either skip it, rush through a couple of arm circles, or just hop on a treadmill for five minut
s and call it good. Here's the thing: a real warm-up isn't about "getting loose." It's about prepping your nervous system, your joints, and your muscles to actually perform.
Let's break down the science, then get into exactly what a good warm-up looks like.
What's Actually Happening When You Warm Up
When you go from sitting at a desk (or standing at a counter, or driving) straight into a workout, your body isn't ready for it. Cold muscles are stiffer and less elastic, which means they don't generate force as efficiently and they're more prone to injury. Your joints haven't produced much synovial fluid yet, so they're not moving as smoothly as they will be in twenty minutes.
There's also a nervous system piece that people miss. Warming up isn't just physical, it's neurological. Your brain and muscles communicate through motor pathways, and those pathways fire more efficiently once they've been "switched on." That's why your first few reps of anything, even a warm-up set, often feel clunky. You're not weak. You're just not fully online yet.
A good warm-up raises your core body temperature, increases blood flow to working muscles, and primes those neural pathways so that when you start your real work, your body is ready to move well instead of playing catch-up.
Why Skipping It Costs You More Than You Realize
Skipping your warm-up doesn't just raise injury risk (though it does). It also means you're leaving performance on the table. Cold muscles can't produce as much force. Joints that haven't been through their full range of motion won't move as efficiently under load. You might be able to grind through a workout without warming up, but you won't move as well, and you definitely won't move as well over time.
This matters just as much whether you're 35 and getting back into a routine after a few years off, or 65 and want to keep doing the things you love without your body holding you back.
What a Real Warm-Up Looks Like
Here's a simple structure that works for almost any kind of training, whether it's strength work, a group class, or a run.
1. Get your heart rate up (3-5 minutes) Something light and rhythmic: brisk walking, easy cycling, jumping jacks, or rowing. The goal here is just to raise your body temperature and get blood moving to your muscles.
2. Move your joints through their full range (3-5 minutes) This is where dynamic stretching comes in, think leg swings, arm circles, walking lunges with a twist, hip openers. Skip the long static stretches here (save those for after your workout). You want movement, not holding.
3. Rehearse the movement pattern (3-5 minutes) This is the piece most people skip entirely. If you're about to squat, do a few bodyweight squats. About to run? Do some light strides. About to do overhead work? Do some band pull-aparts and light shoulder circles. You're teaching your body the exact pattern it's about to do, just at a lower intensity.
4. Ramp into your working weight or intensity Especially for strength training, don't jump straight to your working weight. Build into it with a couple of lighter sets first.
Total time: somewhere between 8 and 15 minutes, depending on what you're about to do. It doesn't need to be long. It needs to be intentional.

Your warm-up should be viewed as part of the workout. It's what allows your body to move the way it's designed to move, and it's one of the simplest things you can do to train smarter, not just harder.
